Bruktawit Worku (4 YEARS OLD) & Yeshihareg Megeresa (HER Mother)

August 19, 2020

Q: When did you know Brucktiet have Down syndrome?

I knew when she was born, I gave birth at Gandhi hospital and the doctor told me that my kid might not be normal (her facial structure might be defected) and that she also had Imperforate anus so they gave me a referral to Black Lion hospital to continue with her checkup.

Q: What was your reaction when the doctor told you Brucktiet have Down syndrome?

I was saddened with the explanation the Doctor gave me; I had miscarriage (3 months) before Brucktiet so i was excited to have but I don’t think anyone should be told the way I was told. But I believe she is a gift from God I am happy to be her mother.

Q: What kind of challenges did you face in raising Brucktiet?

She is a happy and friendly kid, just because of her problem (Imperforate anus) I didn’t send her to school until now, she is always staying with me at the house. I stopped working after having Bruktiet, my husband supports us. The community is very supportive, they don’t make feel less or unseen for having her they are always supportive.

I am not afraid to have another child.

Q: What message do you want to give out?

Parents have the responsibility to raise their kids properly without being afraid of the assumption that the community will judge them, they should let their kids be free and let them be who they are and do what they want to do.

Finally I want to say that I have a big hope that my kid will do big things and I sure that she will make me proud.
